About Telile

Over three decades in the making

A not-for-profit, community-owned television station, founded in Arichat in 1993.

Our history

Born out of a crisis, built for a community

Telile Community Television was founded as a non-profit society in Arichat in 1993. Its first broadcast was in 1994. One of only nine over-the-air, not-for-profit, independent television stations in Canada, it remains a local community broadcaster although its programming is now distributed by cable and satellite across Canada.

The station originated in the years of the collapse of the Atlantic cod fishing industry in the early 1990s. The collapse provoked a terrible and urgent economic crisis for the people of Isle Madame. In the absence, at the time, of any local media such as newspapers, radio or television, urgent questions arose: how to inform local residents about the state of the crisis and the measures being taken to address it, and how to provide a communications medium through which groups and individuals could mobilize a unified and effective community response.

Telile has operated for thirty years in Richmond County. Throughout those years it has enjoyed a solid reputation as a community-focused and community-engaged non-profit organization, of great benefit to local residents and organizations.

Silver Donald Cameron, founding chairman of Telile

You can't participate if you don't know what's going on. You can't have real community, and you can't have real democracy, if you don't have communications.

Telile's role is to make sure that people here do know what's going on and do know how they can participate. That's what Telile is all about.

Our mission

Stories, achievements and scenes of our neighbourhood

Our mission is to seek out the stories, achievements and scenes of our local neighbourhood. We also enjoy joining with other communities in story, music and song.

Telile's focus is on a community which receives little dedicated media coverage from other providers, yet where coverage of local news, culture and entertainment remains of great interest to residents. Because our programming is carried by both Bell and Eastlink to viewers well beyond Isle Madame, it also gives individuals and organizations a way to promote the area to people elsewhere.
