A Message from the Arichat Medical Clinic

As was announced recently, the Arichat Medical Clinic will be losing the services of Dr. Steven DeRoche as of March 1, 2021. We wish Dr. DeRoche all the best in this new phase of his medical career. However, this requires changes for our clinic to maintain high-quality medical care.

As of March 1, 2021, we will no longer be able to see walk-in patients. We will only be able to care for rostered patients of Drs. Laurie and Scott MacNeil. This will mainly impact the Monday evening and Saturday afternoon clinics. They will be treated as regular clinic hours in which you will need to book an appointment ahead of time.

For those patients of Dr. DeRoche, as previously noted, Drs. Laurie and Scott MacNeil cannot absorb his entire patient load and continue to provide timely, quality care. Dr. DeRoche is notifying us of any high-need patients whom we will contact to let them know that their care will be taken over by one of the other physicians. If this leaves you without a physician, please call 811 or visit needafamilypractice.nshealth.ca to register on the provincial waitlist. It is important that everyone in need registers as the Health Authority uses this information to determine services required for this area of the province.

We have applied to list this vacancy and will hopefully be successful in recruiting a new family physician to the area. There are a few things that all of our patients can do to help us during this transition and moving forward with a reduced number of physicians. Most importantly, please be cognizant of time. Do not build up a list of concerns. Appointments are booked in 10-minute increments so there is time for one big concern or a few minor things. Any extra time we take with you delays all of our following appointments and limits our ability to see patients who have urgent concerns or complex issues that day. Please also take into account the time it takes for referrals to be written. There has been a trend for patients immediately asking for a referral to a specialist without exploring the issue with their family physician, as a way to "save time". Writing a proper referral letter takes as long as a typical visit. As general practitioners, we are trained to manage the vast majority of issues that arise and we recognize when something is beyond our scope of practice and will refer when appropriate. The current waitlists for most specialists are 6-12 months or longer. Please work with us to provide you with the best care within our abilities and limit unnecessary referrals so these specialists can catch up and improve access to care for everyone. Also note that it will probably take a much longer time to get an appointment with Drs. Laurie & Scott, so plan your medication reassessments so that you do not run short.

We'd also like to take this opportunity to highlight our collaborative team who may be able to help you in their area of expertise:

-Phoebe Boudreau, Family Practice Registered Nurse, is trained to complete well-baby exams, well-woman exams, immunizations, injections, and can help with a variety of minor issues that would not require a prescription, referral, or diagnostic workup.

-Holly Wilson, Social Worker, is trained to help a wide variety of mental health issues as well as to help connect you to services and supports such as continuing care, financial aid, medical equipment expense coverage, and more.

-Shelley Marchand, Registered Dietitian, is trained to assess your diet and nutrition needs, help you plan a menu that's optimal for you, and advise you on adopting special diets for medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, food allergies, and more.

As part of the collaborative team, any patient of the Arichat Medical Clinic can call to make an appointment with any of these professionals without a referral from a physician.

If you have questions, concerns, or may have special circumstances that you wish to review, please call the clinic to speak with Annette, Lorna, or Julia at 902-226-1674. Thank you all for your support and understanding.
